At the Battle of Preston (1715), an Anglo-Scottish Jacobite army was engaged by Government forces.
This was the only bridge over the River Ribble for miles and it had played a key part in the first Battle at Preston (1648). What Cromwell described as "A lane, very deep and ill, up to the Enemy's army and leading to the Town" is also mentioned by Sir Marmaduke, who blames his Scottish allies for having failed to secure that lane, whose eventual capture enabled the Parliamentary forces to outflank the Royalists. Two were written almost immediately; by Major John Sanderson (a parliamentary officer) and the parliamentary commander Oliver Cromwell, whose letters to Parliament just a few days later were published by George Ormerod in 1844. War period: English (Second) Civil War April to September 1648. As the Government troops advanced along such bottlenecks, they suffered heavy casualties.. Today marks the 368th anniversary of Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Preston. The Ordnance Survey has, since the 1849 1:10,560 map, named Red Bank and marked the battle in the fields to the south of Hermitage Green Lane and the east of the A49. The only contemporary accounts with much authority are those of Sir Marmaduke Langdale

On 8 July 1648, when the Scottish Engager army crossed the Border in support of the English Royalist, the military situation was well defined. Fought within the confines of the town itself, the Jacobites mounted a spirited defence successfully repelling the first assaults on their lines.
