Biography 1 out of 3 found this helpful. After ho-hum reactions to YI YI and BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, this is the first Yang movie that I liked. When a well known businessman goes missing, owing $100m to Taipei's underworld, two hoods decide to follow his son, the leader of a youth gang.
I don't mind a film that makes you think, but there has to be something else to hook me in and encourage me to give it thought. Like a lot of Antonioni (whose name repeatedly pops up in the reviews of this film), it only left me cold. A creature comes to his apartment and only their son Sherman sees it, but his parents don't believe the boy. Four short films from four different directors, spanning from the 1950s to the 1980s. There are lies told in this film which cause some of the problems faced by the main characters. For those who love cinema on a more intellectual level, however, I imagine this would be more rewarding.
This film shows Taipei as gritty, dirty, ugly, poor and indifferent. A coming-of-age story about a young brother and sister whom spend a pivotal summer in the country with their grandparents.
