I wasn't fully aware of the plan to evacuate children from England to other areas of the world during WWII, and I had never heard of the horrific tragedy that befell the SS City of Benares. It is from the point of view of Ken Sparks, a 13-year old boy. Also about the Nazis bombing London. This book is based on the true story of a group of children who were evacuated from England and boarded the SS City of Benares, which was to take them to Canada. I think I will hide much of this review, because I am thinking that everything I wrote might be a spoiler.
I can’t believe it’s true. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it as a classroom read or on a booklist for older readers.This is a simple read, sparsely worded but weighty. The book is based on the true story of Ken Sparks, an evacuee from the London Blitz, on board the SS City of Benares. The book tells a story that is inspiring and insightful. But when the City of Benares is torpedoed by German U-Boats, Ken and forty-five other children, passengers and sailors escape on Lifeboat 12. Written in free verse the story just flies! The story is far too incredible to believe thus the author provides a very long list of sources used. The story includes wonderful themes of bravery, hope, and family. Told from the POV of Ken Sparks, a real 13 year old boy, and using historically correct sources, the author tells the true story of a ship bound for Canada with 90 children escaping the war. Written in free verse the story just flies! Ken Sparks, 13, is one of the dubious “lucky” ones to set sail on the City of the Benares for Canada. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it especially compelling.Outstanding book that is inviting to readers (even reluctant readers). Thirteen-year-old Ken is being sent away from London to Canada to be safe from Nazi bombing. As the days drag by and no land or rescue boat appears, Ken begins to wonder if they will simply die at sea.
The adventure to Canada quickly becomes a living challenge to survive. With Nazis bombing London every night, it’s time for thirteen-year-old Ken to escape. I’m thankful to Susan for writing this story and for the incredible back matter (the most thorough I’ve seen in a MG novel)! What follows is a harrowing true story of adventure and survival at sea.Susan Hood's research and insistence on historic accuracy allow this historical fiction verse novel to resonate with depth of character and critical details. I enjoyed all of the suspense of this book when they were trapped in the Atlantic not knowing if they would live or die. I love to read the many WWII survival stories.Wow. Ken has to survive on lifeboat with 50 other people until they can be rescued. Nonstop action and adventure to the very end. Will Ken and the others survive on the small lifeboat they manage to escape on? Ken’s father and stepmother sign him up to be evacuated from the city. This book is so nice. Now I write children's picture books full time. Also about the Nazis bombing London. Ken is sent with a group of children from London to Canada during World War 2 to escape the bombing. They have limited rations and even less water. Susan's verse structure is lovely. Ken has to survive on lifeboat with 50 other people until they can be rescued. You got to find out what the struggle and how the characters fixed there problem and got out of there. The Nazis have taken over France and the threat of bombs and destruction in London has every parent and adult quaking.
Many people raved about LIFEBOAT 12 by Susan Hood, but it took me a while to pick it up because I thought I was burned out on World War II stories that took place in Europe. You would think that the ending was going to end badly but it actually ended perfectly. I recall a WWII movie by Hitchcock called Lifeboat. He wants to stay home. Now 600 miles away from England, everyThe Germans are coming. They have to make the decision to wait for rescue or try to get to Ireland with their meager supplies. One of the seminal questions of the book is whether you would rather be bombed at home in London or torpedoed at sea. Hood did excellent research, including several sessions with Ken himself, who always thought modestly of himself as a survivor, not a hero.I feel lucky to have received an ARC of this book!
In all, a great book!Novel in verse. The author's style makes it seem as though you are there.
