The course was first laid out in 1919, and although it has been modified over the years the course retains many of the original features and original charm, including several “template holes” that incorporate design elements from some of the famous Scottish links courses.

The layout features over 50 well-placed bunkers and winds through 350 acres with each hole surrounded by native prairie grasses and mesquites that not only adds to the scenic beauty of the course but also to its overall challenge.
This is because the punchbowl effect of the terrain will funnel a short shot onto the green and toward the pin.

It sits only minutes away from the historic Village of Pinehurst east of the traffic circle on Midland Road.
Most of the greens are at least slightly elevated and most allow run-up shots to reach the pin.
Left of the tree on the far side of the pond is a good aiming point, resulting in a short iron approach shot. Midland Country Club is friendly and challenging and the only 9-hole golf course located in Pinehurst. The fairways are not overly wide, but are generous enough.
