I've read several other histories and found my head spinning and unable to keep track of the various players and their shifting motivations and alliances. Well written, clearly defined history of the N Ireland conflict. 024196265X Highly recommend for anyone looking for Irish/UK history.Was looking more for insight into how the troubles started (first 30 or so pages) than a shot by shot of what the troubles were (the other 400 pages).Crisp, unbiased, in-depth exploration of the political history of Northern Ireland. As an American with no British or Irish forebears, it always puzzled me how, in the second half of the 20th century, two apparently similar peoples, Irish Catholics and the Protestant descendants of 16th and 17th century Scottish colonists, could generate so much enmity between them. Easy to read and a fairly balanced view of the troubles. I can only say that my understanding of the troubles, their genesis and resolution, has been greatly improved by reading this eminently-readable work.
An eye opener. Authors David McKittrick and David McVea have done an admirable job of sifting through the multitude of documents, books and memoirs/diaries/autobiographies to present a balanced and detailed analysis of the events, their causes and results. The Volunteer: A Former IRA Man's True Story Any more detail or divergence from the straight summery and I don't think the general reader could take it all in. This was the most informative book on Ireland that I have ever read. As someone who lives in the US and knew of the Troubles, I always realized that I never fully understood it. I grew up during this particular time frame - although in other parts of Europe - so aspects of this are much clearer and personal to me than another reader might gather from it.
