The sensor acquires 3D data in form of a depth image. But I find Agisoft's greater flexibility helps me make the most of a lot of scans where the data isn't perfect, which is much of the time. But I like Agisoft's ability to groom the dense cloud before meshing and the ability to edit a mesh in an external application and then swap it back in and re-project the texture. The pictures are taken so rapidly that it is almost impossible to not get enough overlap between them.
