Thanks for sharing your experience with us. In terms of a base, would Sorrento, Amalfi or Positano be good options in terms of what we like and transport? I know time is short and I really don’t want to lose the day I arrive. Many travelers prefer to stop at Pompeii on their way into or out of the Amalfi Coast, since it is along the way.

Remember, the entire coastline is just about 30 miles long so with a bus or taxi you can get to whatever town you need relatively easy. If you just have one day, we might suggest taking the bus to Ravello, view the gardens and have lunch, then take the bus or ferry to Positano to explore there. All three towns are quite well connected along the coast, though perhaps Amalfi is slightly less so. Mmmm, be sure to try Nerano’s famous zucchini spaghetti!All those steps are worth it for a beach like this one in Praiano! A must-see for visitors is Santa Maria Asunta, a church that features a dome made of majolica tiles and a black Madonna. Is that recommended when you have a car as well? We think that you can absolutely see all of the Amalfi Coast in 8 nights. Amalfi, Salerno, Sorrento and Positano are all major ferry stops.Any advice welcome! Taste regional specialties like the Sant’Anna tomato and Monti Lattari cheese, or if you want to go hyper-local, don’t miss Nerano’s legendary spaghetti with zucchini pesto.Positano is perhaps best known for the pastel-colored houses that spill down its sheer cliffs into the sea.

Vietri sul Mare is filled with shops selling the areas famous majolica pottery. Where would you suggest the best home base to be able to do everything we want ?It sounds like Sorrento might be the place for you.
That said, Sorrento is the nearest with the fastest train to Naples. It’s the perfect place to stay for those who want the luxury and beauty of Positano without the VIP nightlife/prices.The town has a little something for everyone, with great pebble (and sometimes sandy) beaches as well as interesting culture and history. Such excursions become more difficult the further along the coast you stay because the roads in an out are few and famously narrow.
My head is going crazy as I just cannot put a plan into place!! Of course, on the to do list is : Pompeii and Capri and personally I would love to be walking distance to the beach. We might stay at a quieter town on the Amalfi coast, or in Solerno. I am familiar with many parts of Italy but never really been to the south so because of this I purchased plane tickets to Napoli for myself ,my mom and my 2 small children(3,5). Are you looking for a big, sunny beach like the one on Maiori, or would you be happier in the mountain solitude of Sant’Agata? Will there be a sudden surge of tourists during these two days, or the whole week? This pretty little town was a favorite movie locale for Roberto Rossellini, who is honored every November with a film festival. My husband and I will be going to Italy for the fist time. If you’re coming to the Amalfi Coast from the north (Rome etc) you might want to consider stopping in Naples and Pompeii along the way down the coast.
