The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose review
This book wasn't a waste of time, and I did finish all 500+ pages, but I probably wouldn't read another of his books. To change this data, submit a It is very easy to forget who people are from one section to another.
He has not done a good job. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. This book covers World War II in the Pacific from the perspective of a few chosen men, some names you'll recognize, some not.
I wish I could give Hugh Ambrose's The Pacific a 3.5 but I can't. It's limited to a half a dozen viewpoints, so you'll get nothing of the CBI theatre, but will get something of a good feel for the islands campaign via army, navy and marine "I was there" style narratives. This is the 489 pages light more or less first person view of the war in the pacific in world war two. Hugh Ambrose's writing is tortuous, tedious, and disjointed. He has not done a good job.
The Pacific delves into the literature of WWII, starting from Pearl Harbor.
Hell isn't an ocean away when you're reading this book, you're holding it in the palms of your hand. The book stands out in that it tells the stories of lots (and lots) of soldiers in combat. His experiences flying missions from aircraft carriers both during sea battles and in support of the Marines give an important insight into an aspect of the war the television series doesn’t cover at all.The book also addresses some of the more controversial elements associated with the war.
No chapters but 5 acts as it is a companion to the HBO mini-series of same namesake. The book is exactly what it says it is a oompanion to the mini series The Pacific. It limits itself to Navy and Marine personnel: Sidney Phillips, Vernon 'Mike" Micheel, Sgt. No exception here. Hugh's prose is rather sodden and he shies away from really getting close to the characters, as I'd hoped. He describes I loved the mini-series The Pacific, and I love most of Stephen Ambrose's books, so I thought I would give this a shot. Judging by the number of ratings this book has had, I sense that no further comments are necessary. It settles on a few characters, some of which are familiar to anyone who has read any number of books on the Pacific Theater. The book does suffer alot less (if at all) from the pro-American/anti-British tosh which his father used to espouse and which let him down as a historian, as well as marring my enjoyment of his work. January 1st 2010 The author really tries to express the feelings and all the trouble the soldiers had to deal with during the war in the pacific. I like it a lot so far.
While I feel secure in my knowledge of the European Theater of Operations during World War II, I am less confident about the Pacific Theater. Of course, you couldn’t avoid hearing about atomic bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, but that’s about it. Ambrose follows up on a TV series to provide more details of what happened in the Pacific side of WW2. Of course, you couldn’t avoid hearing about atomic bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, but that’s about it. We’d love your help. Hugh has made a good fist of trying to capture the experiences of five individuals who fought in the Pacific Theatre. If you like history and in particular WWII history you will find this very interesting. Great stories. If you can't find a piece of coal for that deserving person's stocking this year, "The Pacific" is an excellent substitute. I found the book hard to get into but once I had established a rythm with the book it was an easy read. It should definitely be required reading and absolutely mandatory in order to graduate from high school. Hugh please keep writing and publishing. He also doesn't really delve very deeply into the characters so that you feel an emotional bond with them. War teaches different men different lessons, and Ambrose using in many cases first hand material from the men themselves makes clear how those lessons were learned. The Pacific presents the Pacific War, from America's first battle with the Japanese .
Published I listened to this book on CD while driving, and it did a good job of holding my attention, even with stories with which I was very familiar as an historian.Companion to the HBO miniseries, this is a pretty decent volume, although there aren’t any new insights, because it’s a confluence of other primary sources, but the stories are distilled for the convenience of the casual historian. I enjoyed how the book included some stories and details not covered deeply in the series. They learned discipline and they learned to care for others, not only themselves. "Manila John" Basilone, Eugene B Sledge and Robert "Lucky" Leckie. Secondly, the author is the Son of the Late and famed Stephen Ambrose, one of my if not my favorite Historians. This is his first book solely written by him as he had previously contributed to his Father's research and writing before his unfortunate and premature death in 2002.
If youOn the cover of "The Pacific" the following appears beneath the title,"Hell Was an Ocean Away." World War 2 fascinates me more than any other time in history because of its complexity, scope and magnitude then and now.
