An exception occurred after the death of the sultan Ḥamad bin Thuwain on August 25, 1896, when his nephew, Khalid bin Barghash, seized the throne, preempting the British-supported candidate, Ḥamud bin Moḥammed. The flag symbolized this latter legal distinction, representing the sovereignty that the Sultan of Zanzibar retained over the coastal strip of Kenya after leasing its administration to Britain in a treaty signed in 1895. The sultan is now in his seventies and lives in exile in the United Kingdom.
