Judy Baca the Great Wall
Begun in 19… In the town the “Red Car” provided an early energy efficient form of transportation. The segment continues with the invention of the car and airplane, which shaped the development of 20th century California. The first 1,000 feet were completed in nine weeks of painting. More dangerous is the effect of air pollution, years of exposure to direct sunlight, and fertilizer damage from the adjoining park lawns on the colors.Painted during the first summer of work in 1976, the first one thousand feet are divided into sections of 100 feet each. The entire mural area had to be sandbagged so that the residual water would not make the work area slippery.
Providing a visual history of this area from prehistoric times to the 1960’s, it is a testament to the working peoples of Los Angeles, representing their role in the shaping and development of this city. The site channels the main water flow through the San Fernando Valley to the ocean and becomes extremely perilous in a rain storm so weather watches and evacuation methods are a constant worry for the 30 members of the restoration team composed of professional muralist, interns from universities around the country, local volunteers and past participants of the Great Wall productions.”Special thank you to: CCHE, SMMC, City of LA, County of LA and Prudential Social Investments. On the last day of the 1983 summer project, each of the Mural Makers sat down to write about his/her experiences of working on the mural.
The fourth segment, designed by Judith Hernandez, is dominated by the figure of a Spanish land baron, illustrating the “hacendados” who dominated early California. There’s so much to learn from the mural as each moment in history melts into the next. It’s viewable from the park above the flood control wash. Best to park near Coldwater Canyon Ave and Burbank Blvd, where the mural begin (If you see a prehistoric ground sloth sticking its tongue out at the rest of the mural, you’re in good shape), and walk along the fence, parallel to Coldwater Canyon, toward Oxnard Street.Outside of the cookie cutter history books that are written from one perspective, The Great Wall involved a diverse group of young individuals with their families working with historians, artists and academicians to give an accurate and personal presentation of California/Los Angeles history! It cost nothing but a drive to Valley Glen College to enjoy this amazing mural! Designed by Christina Schlesinger, this section provides an overview of Chumash practical and spiritual life as it might have been in 1000 BC. The work was very hard at times but the finishing product was well worth the effort, you know, the end justifying the means. UCLA/SPARC Digital/Mural Lab staff worked with the staff of the UCLA Visualization Portal to model in 3-D the entire Great Wall of Los Angeles mural site and the surrounding city area. While Baca was working as a consultant for the Tujunga WashGreenbelt Project, she was offered the chance to beautify the flood-control channel. I have educated myself and with the work I have done I will help to educate countless others, I have never been involved with the creating of a landmark before, but if I had a choice of any the mural is the one I would choose.
By 10,000 BC, as Indians migrated to the Americas, perhaps on a land bridge, the Chumash Indian peoples settled in this region. They had a special relationship to and respect for the animals, especially porpoises. In the mirror, the men see themselves as they wish they could be‑warm, affectionate, caring. While the work never addresses Environmental Justice directly, EJ is present in a number of the mural’s sections as the artist addresses other social issues and memorializes inter-racial harmony.“Chavez Ravine and The Division of the Chicano Community”One example of the presence of Environmental Justice in the mural is the section referencing the construction of Dodger’s stadium, titled “Chavez Ravine and The Division of the Chicano Community.” It depicts how freeway construction reshaped the city of Los Angeles, much to the disadvantage of the low-income Chicano communities forced to relocate or suffer environmental and health damages.
